JP Smith and Stefan Kozlov paired up for the first time last week and made the partnership a winning one, taking home the Winnetka Challenger doubles title.
The duo beat Yoshihito Nishioka and Marco Chiudinelli in the first round by a score of 64 62, but the match of the tournament undoubtedly came in the second round, against top seeds Divij Sharan and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. The teams split the first two sets, with the Indian duo taking the first set 64, and Smith and Kozlov responding by taking the second set by a score of 75. In the 10 point tiebreak, the serving team won the first 18 points until at 9-9, Kozlov hit a winner that split the top seeds, and the duo closed the match on serve to win 11-9.
In the semifinals, Smith and Kozlov faced wildcards Alex Lawson and Jackson Withrow, again needing three sets to win 36 62 10-6. In the final, Smith and Kozlov made quick work of the three seeds, Dave O’Hare and Sekou Bangoura, winning 63 63 in just over an hour.
